Getting Personal: First Trimester Pregnancy Recap!

In case you hadn't heard...

We're having a baby!!!

Man, what a surprise, am I right? Well, it was for us at least. I consider it the best surprise though. I am already so in love with this little peach, and my husband and I are OVER THE MOON. I thought it'd be fun to do a pregnancy recap for each trimester since I love reading these (and always have). Read on, or don't, it's up to you!

How I found out:
Well, even though it was a surprise, I suspected I might be pregnant about a week before I took a test. I was feeling tired and queasy, but I kept chalking it up to other things. I ate raw oysters and thought, "Hmm," (because you're not supposed to eat oysters) but still, I went on my merry way all week. The day my period was due though, I slept for 12 hours. That was clue #1. I'd been feeling off that entire day, and while we were out to dinner with a friend, I went to the bathroom and realized I'd put my underwear on backwards. Y'all, pregnancy brain is REAL! Clue #2. So on the way home, we stopped for a test and I took it, still not believing I could be pregnant. But... it was positive!! 

How Peter found out: 
He suspected I was before I did. He even held the test out for me to read, and I proceeded to scream and throw it onto the ground, LOL. 

When are you due?
Mid-April 2018!

Did you get morning sickness?
No! Well, I had some days of feeling queasy, and a weekend where I felt like I had the flu (looking back, it was likely the antibiotics I was taking). But I never threw up, and only felt queasy a handful of times. I'm considering myself VERY lucky!

Did you have any food cravings or aversions? 
My sweet tooth disappeared seemingly overnight, to be replaced by a hankering for ANYTHING spicy and salty. I craved chips and olives, jalapenos and cheese. I'm a huge sugar fiend, so this was strange for me. Also, salads. I know, boring, but salads taste so much better pregnant. I've had many rotating aversions that come and go (hummus, specifically?) and salmon, but nothing that's sent me running to the bathroom. I had a big milk craving weeks 7-8 that turned into a big aversion in week 9. Pregnancy is weird. 

Has your diet changed?
Umm... haha. I'm still working my way out of the first trimester exhaustion, where I only wanted burritos and burgers and takeout. So, we're working on it. I try to eat a few servings of fruits and veggies everyday, and I'm trying to make better choices when I'm out (brown rice, balsamic dressing, salad instead of fries) so let me update you on this in trimester two, haha.

I am still drinking small amounts of caffeine (about a half cup of coffee a day, or a full cup of black tea). I just can't give it up. But obviously not eating the things I'm supposed to cut out, like deli meat, raw fish, and alcohol. Though I would give anything for some sashimi or an Italian sub, but oh well.

How was your energy?
Literally nonexistent. I am not joking, pregnancy exhaustion was my worst symptom. I ended up starting a new job right after finding out (I got the job offer 3 days before I took the pregnancy test), so working full-time while not being able to tell anyone why I looked like a zombie all the time was difficult! 

Did you exercise?
I am trying, guys! I was really good until week 7 or 8, and then it kind of fell to the wayside. But now that the exhaustion is wearing off, I have more energy to take evening walks. I'm trying out a prenatal yoga class, too, so hopefully I can continue throughout the 26+ weeks I have left. I want to be an active mom, and I've heard labor is easier when you've been exercising, so it's a win-win for me. I have to counteract all the crap I ate this trimester somehow!

What physical changes have you noticed?
Well, I have a tiny bump. And I've had one since week 8 or so. Everyone says it's impossible, but at my 10-week appt, I learned I have a tilted uterus and that may be why I'm showing on the earlier side. I'm writing this in my comfortable maternity jeans, LOL! Other than that, I don't feel that different. I went up a bra cup size, and my hair is really shiny, but otherwise you probably wouldn't know I'm pregnant!

Are you reading anything?
I started reading What to Expect When You're Expecting but I didn't love the negative connotations (and the scare tactics, which are not great for this anxiety-ridden mama) so I switched to Expecting Better and I love it. The author backs everything up with medical articles too, which is nice. 

Lastly... we know the gender! Our doctor did a genetic blood screening test and (luckily) everything came back normal. On the plus side, we found out the baby's sex!


Over the moon, I tell ya.
